Auger-Aliassime and Fernandez Get Wins in Roland Garros

Five different Canadians are entered in the Singles draw at the 2022 French Open. On Sunday, 2 out of the 3 that played secured wins, while Rebecca Marino was sent home by Coco Gauff after a great effort to qualify for the main draw.

Felix Comes Back from 2 Sets Down

Felix Auger-Aliassime’s Roland Garros campaign got off to a stressful start having to dig himself of out a 2 set hole against Juan Pablo Varillas of Peru.

Felix had never won a match at Roland Garros previously, so getting his first match win under his belt “feels special.”

Felix has the athleticism and shot making to do well at the French, and in juniors he was runner up in 2016.

Auger-Aliassime plays Ugo Carabelli of Argentina in R2.

Leylah Fernandez Gets Confidence Win Over Mladenovic

Fernandez got a confident start to her 2022 Roland Garros with a much needed straight sets win (+ a bagel) of Mladenovic, 6-0, 7-6.

It was Leylah’s first Grand Slam match win in 2022 after going out in Round 1 in Melbourne Park. Leylah has faced a lot of pressure with new sponsors and expectation after her cinderella run to the US Open final last fall, and has struggled to get the results she was hoping for in 2022 so far.

Leylah won the Junior French Open in 2019 so she can definitely play well on these courts, and as her confidence builds, watch out.

Fernandez plays Katerina Siniakova in R2.
