Who is On Team Canada For The Davis Cup Fiinals In Malaga?

Team Canada in Valencia (before Shapovalov joined the team for Malaga).

Felix Auger - Aliassime

  • Ranking: 6

  • 2022 Titles: Rotterdam, Florence, Antwerp, Basel

  • Career prize money: $9, 462, 345

Felix Auger-Aliassime has been Canada’s best player in 2022. He’s won 4 titles, and made it to a career high of #6 in the world. After the US Open is when his form really hit it’s peak where he won three titles back to back to back and had a 16 match winning streak. He spoke with The Slice in an exclusive interview in Basel, before he won the Title.

Felix lead Team Canada through the Davis Cup qualifications in Valencia, beating World #1 Carlos Alcaraz in an impressive effort.

Denis Shapovalov

  • Ranking: 18

  • 2022 Titles: 0

  • Career prize money: $10, 144, 348

Denis had an up and down 2022 season to say the least. After a good start to the season in Australia, making the QFs… Shapovalov hit the worst slump of his career after beating Rafa Nadal in Rome, losing 8 of his next 9 matches through the clay, grass and into the hard court swing.

But, the fiery Canadian finished his season with a return to great form, making two finals and a SF to end his ATP season, before joining Team Canada for a chance at Davis Cup glory.

Vasek Pospisil

  • Ranking: 100

  • 2022 Titles: 2 Challengers

  • Career prize money: $6, 958, 244

Vasek Pospisil has been working hard in 2022 to get back to competing regularly on the ATP Tour. He’s had decent success on the ATP Challenger tour this year, ending the year with the title in Drummondville, Quebec which got him to the #100 ranking.

With a lot of Davis Cup experience, including leading the amazing run to the final in 2019 with stellar play, Pospisil will be a senior leader on Canada’s talented 2022 Finals squad.

Alexis Galarneau

  • Ranking: 204

  • 2022 Titles: 0

  • Career prize money: $114, 448

Alexis has competing well on the ATP Challenger Tour since leaving his 5 year career at NC State in the NCAA. He’s almost cracked the Top 200, and he’s become very consistent with results in the second half of 2022.

With some of the best hair in tennis, and an infectious smile, Alexis is a star. He joined The Slice with fellow Team Canada player Gabriel Diallo to talk a little bit about their journey’s to Team Canada:

Gabriel Diallo

  • Ranking: 224

  • 2022 Titles: 0 (Granby Challenger Title)

  • Career prize money: $41, 535

Gabriel Diallo has quietly become Canada’s most exciting young prospect. Although he’s already 21 years old, his time in College Tennis at Kentucky has prepared him well for the pro tour.

He’s 6’7, and makes Felix Auger-Aliassime look short beside him. Now he has filled out that frame, and brings an intimidating game to any opponent.

Canada’s Route to The Davis Cup Title

Canada takes on Germany in the QFs on Thursday, where they are heavy favourites as Alexander Zverev is still out with injury for Germany.

If Canada get’s through, they will face a tough Italian side in the SFs, with Lorenzo Musetti and Lorenzo Sonego leading the singles. Canada would still be the favourites in that matchup, though, but if it goes to doubles it could get really tricky.

Either Croatia or Australia would be waiting for Canada in the Finals, if the Canucks were to progress all the way through. Both good teams, both beatable for Canada.

This tournament will be a test for Canada’s resolve and ability to play to their potential as a team.
