Spaniards Dominate 2023 ATP Awards

The 2022 ATP Awards were handed out last week, with some shake ups to the incumbents on a couple of awards, and some fresh faces throughout.

Let’s take a look:

Carlos Alcaraz wins the 2022 US Open.

2022 ATP Most Improved Player

Most Improved Player: Carlos Alcaraz 🇪🇸

There were two players who came to the top of most minds when it came to MIP… Carlos and Holger. The two 19 year olds who took the ATP Tour by storm this year.

Carlos started the year at #32 and finished at #1.

Holger started at #103 and finished at #11, cracking the Top 10 on the way.

The debate of which feat is more impressive is a close one, but the ATP Players voted on Carlos as the most improved player, and it’s well deserved.

2022 ATP Comeback PLayer of the Year

Borna Coric celebrates as he wins the 2022 Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

Comeback Player of the Year: Borna Coric 🇭🇷

Borna had a wild ride of a 2022 season. After coming back from injury, losing in R1s at challengers, and then going on an amazing run to win the Cincinnati M1000 out of nowhere. He’s the obvious choice for Comeback Player.

May: #278. Now: #26.

He also hit one of the coldest celebrations of all time:

2022 ATP Newcomer of the Year

Newcomer of the Year: Holger Rune 🇩🇰

Holger had an amazing 2022 season, breaking his own goal of Year End Top 25, and winning the Paris Masters in astounding fashion, coming from behind to top Novak Djokovic in the final.

He’s played second fiddle to Alcaraz all year, but by the end of the season, he was the hottest 19 year old tour. No doubt. Starting the year just outside the Top 100 and finishing it just outside the Top 10 is an amazing feat.

2022 ATP Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award

Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award: Casper Ruud 🇳🇴

Casper Ruud is generally seen an ultra classy gentleman on the ATP Tour. The soft spoken Norwegian has become the first player to win the Sportsmanship award other than Nadal (5x) and Federer (13x) since 2003.

What a stat.

Here’s our interview from July:

Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award

Winner: Andy Murray 🇬🇧

Andy Murray won this award after donating his prize money for 2022 (starting in March) – more than US$630,000 to the Ukraine relief with UNICEF.

Pretty hard to beat that, and he’s an obvious choice for this award.

2022 ATP Fan Favourite Award

Winner: Rafael Nadal 🇪🇸

Rafa has won the fan favourite award for the 1st time, dethroning the now retired Roger Federer… who won in 19 times in a row since 2003 😅.

2022 ATP Coach of the Year

Winner: Juan Carlos Ferrero 🇪🇸

Carlos Alcaraz’s coach and former player Ferrero is a great choice for this honour, as voted on by his coaching colleagues on the ATP. Juan Carlos seems to be able to get the most out of Carlos, and has done well to not over play his player, even though he’s only 19.
