ATP Cup off to Epic Start

Leading up to this year’s inaugural ATP Cup there were many doubts about the tournament. Is it a Davis Cup rip off? Why so close to the Australian Open? What is happening with the point system?

All those doubts have been silenced for now as we have watched the spectacle of the ATP Cup unfold before our eyes.

The Round Robin

The 24 countries represented were split into six, four-team groups spread around Australia in Brisbane, Sydney and Perth. We saw amazing clashes between well know tennis countries like Spain or England and outsiders like Moldova or Georgia. Standout performances from Canada’s Denis Shapovalov, Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov and Australia’s Nick Kyrgios made for incredible action in the early rounds.

The top eight teams from the group stage found themselves in the Quarter Finals posing matchups of epic proportions.

Australia defeated Britain in an absolute nail-biter. After Nick Kyrgios destroyed Cameron Norrie after a cozy sleep in, Dan Evans took out Alex de Minaur in an EPIC 3 set thriller to force a deciding doubles match. The team of Kyrgios and de Minaur then proceeded to pull out an amazing 3rd set tie break in the doubles to secure the tie for Australia.

The powerhouse team Russia took out Argentinia with relative ease as Daniil Medvedev and Karen Khachanov pose a formidable threat.

Team Serbia took out Canada in both singles match despite Denis Shapovalov’s heroic effort vs. World #2 Novak Djokovic. The young Canadian showed a much-improved maturity in his offensive and defensive game and pushed Djokovic to the absolute limits before the Serb clinched the 3rd set tie-break.

Spain secured the final spot in the last four, taking out Belgium in the deciding doubles match. David Goffin had one of the performances of the year so far taking out World #1 Rafa Nadal in straight sets.

The Semi-Finals will go down on Saturday and are sure to bring some amazing matches between some of the bests players in the world. Stay tuned to The Slice on Youtube and Instagram for daily updates on the action.
